capturing all the feels

So very often a moody photo can capture very well the feels of the moment. Clearly these 'feels' are not an event, or a moment, or a celebration. Although they CAN be that. Most of the time these types of photos are emotions captured. That's what this story here today is all about. Capturing a moment of a feel.

This moment here was a spare of the moment sort of capture. Then, it was an opportunity to be filled in with journaling. And that my friends, is telling your story.

Nothing was really going on this day by way of a peopled event. Rather this was another really cold day. Still snowy. And grey. It's unusual for us here on the Colorado plains to have so many of these type days so early in the winter season.

I am not great with grey days. My personality is such that I really have to push through these days. Do the next right thing. Else I will just curl up in a ball in front of the fire place and pretend I am a cat! Now. While some days that is ok. On days I need to be productive it is not ok. So, what did I do in response to another dark day of cold that I do not have a great temperament for? I made something with it. Literally. I took a fun styled shot: my socked feet. My umpteenth cup of coffee. And my front room tree. The grey of the window falling in on it all. And, I took a photo!

Then, I 'scrapped' said photo.

The other fun thing I did when 'scrapping this photo' was to pull together all the fun things I am enjoying using right now. Those ink colors for one. 49 and Market Rub-Ons. Always. New Photo Shop things from Vicki Boutin. Snowflake stamps from ScrapbookCom.

I did process this scrapbook layout on video. It's in the queue, my friends. It will get posted soon.

I'm telling you, there is nothing better than fighting the winter blues with making. Not only that, but being honest with the emotions a photo shares is very much part of telling one's story. It can be hard to capture an emotion that you are feeling. My attempt at that was to not really capture exactly how I was feeling...but rather to capture a moment in my day that would represent the feels. What I really wanted to do in capturing this emotion was to turn it into something beautiful. Now, clearly, that is not always something we are able to do. A sick friend. A family member lost. Those are some very serious emotions, which I know well about. And sometimes they do not even need a photo.

But when you get lucky enough to capture an emotion on your camera, well then, follow that through by telling it's story in a memorable way.

That is just one way to capture an emotion. The best way of all to document them tho? Yep. You guessed it. Journal it. Yes. Take the time to write about the situation. The perspective is there just right under the ink. Does not matter if you hand write it (which I highly suggest), or type it. Make a space on your page, as I did here under my photo and layers of paper and ephemera, and tell the story.

Why do I elevate this making and story telling so much? Well, it's not something that I think needs to be worshipped or anything, but I really do believe in making these more slow moments a part of our everyday life. That can be taking the photo. That can be making the page. That can be writing the story. I want to encourage you, dear reader, to create space in your life to daily tell the story. And we will just continue to unpack that all the year through.

  1. Jamie, I think I get you. I need to look out of my head. If I find a photo that captures that gray feeling, then I can tell the story. These long winter days are not friends for some (many?) of us.

    1. The grey seems so much more this year for our area. We are use to sunny wintry days. I hope you can stay focused and making during the long winter too, my friend.

  2. I so agree! And for me, being able to go back and remember that day or that moment is so important. For example, my Grandson telling us after a sleepover, ‘boy, you feed us well!’ 😂 Can’t wait to see the video. Martha

    1. Gosh! That is the best thing to hear from a grandson ever! What a lucky kid he is. Thank you for sharing that story. I know you will enjoy documenting it as well.
