held hostage

santa has kidnapped me and held me hostage to shop or make gifts. trying to make my deadline of today to be done, or at least have all supplies purchased. i am almost there. yeah!

bushel and peck blog site has been a source of inspiration to me lately. in the season of either buying or making handmade gifts, she is offering a beautiful array of vintage items in her etsy shop. and there is free shipping for the next few weeks. is it okay to buy myself an early christmas present?

watch for tomorrow to be a new post and an update on this blog. i feel the need to give this joint a bit of a boost.

have a great beginning of the week.

days1-9

this book is taking over my life presently. i spent several hours on it monday, which was such a wonderful thing for me to get to do. i never get time like that to work on projects. it's been fun being creative when supplies would get low. as well as being spontaneous when i just HAD to run out to archivers to make a quick cardstock purchuse. (how that basic grey paper, and making memories vintage finds made their way in my basket i will never know!)

as stated in a previous post, vintage theme is what is inspiring this year's edition for the most part. that 7 gypsies flocked paper is gorgeous. if you have any you know what i mean. my cover page is textured creme cardstock, with pin line for a frame. the christmas sticker is last year's making memories. using the rest of that stash throughout this book. the rub ons are basic grey, and the chipboard numbers are american craft. i stripped away the colored paper that was coloring the numbers originally, and then painted them in black, and finished with diamond glaze on the top.

day1:: a simple pattern paper block on the left. part of last years stash on the right: making memories die cut sheet, with a very old mm rubon on. i loved those. and the 'one' is from shabby chic crafts. i will probably place the days photo above the pattern paper, and then journal on the red.

day2:: one of my favorite pages because of the gathering of elements on the lower left. (remember you can click on the photo to enlarge) this is the other side of the die cut paper that has a piece of katie pertiet's la cremerie fraise cut to fit on top. the best wishes is 7gypsies. the '2' is from american crafts, this time i just left it with it's color. and i made the paper clip element by adhering the making memories epoxy sticker to the top of it before attaching the clip to the tag. the other side is simply a piece of paper from last years stash with rounded corners.

day4::more la cremerie and shabby chic crafts. the right side is jenni bowlin patterned paper. some of the pages are left fairly simple. the plan will be to of course add the photo, as well as a journaling block, and word stickers here and there.

day5::lots of stash on the elements page. the post card block is october afternoon i think from the road map collection. i stamped it with an old stampin up french text. (one of my all time favorite background stamps, now retired.) more mm stickers from last year, and that beautiful velvet trim is from a zany zinnia kit from much earlier in the year. i'm lovin' using up the stash!

day6::another simple page. pomegranate bazzill textured stock on the bottom with stampin up kraft on the top (you knew i would stick kraft in here somewhere.) the velvet ric rac is from last year's wip kit i think. the 6 is another shappy chic. the right side is newly acquired patterned paper...not remembering the manufacuter right now.

day7:: look familiar? day 7 is very much like the cover page. i decided instead of recreating every page from scratch to follow the pattern of the pages up to this point. this does not make them exactly alike, but at least i have a sketch, if you will, to work from going forward. i am happy with how this is working out.

day8::fairly self explanatory.

day9:: i love the pages with heavier embellishments. again, not every page is loaded, just a few of them. like little bursts of eye candy here and there.

next time i will show off a few more of my pages, some of my favorites.

thanks ladies for all your comments. i enjoy the input.

constructing the daily

took me a while to decide what was going to hold this year's december daily. i really like the simplicity of the chipboard covers and large book rings, which is what i did last year. but i kept thinking i wanted to change it up. while the canvas books look great, i started thinking i wanted mine to be more structured. i came across a 6x8 notebook at my lss's trash to treasure sale a few weeks ago. it was navy. with gold pressed lettering on the front. it was only a dollar. i grabbed it.

fortunately, the cover was not the typical office supply store notebook plastic. it had a texture to it which i thought i would be able to paint. turns out i was right. so, grabbing the gesso, i went to work.

i gesso'd the cover a couple of times, and then painted it in a manila acrylic. originally i was thinking i was going to offset the cover embellishment and be able to cover up the lettering indention that was on the cover. i nixed that idea and just turned the book around so it would be on the back instead.

here is the inside, before paint. i got a little giddy working on altering this notebook, as i was finding it was actually going to work.

the completed inside. using a kit from Katie Pertiet:: La Cremerie: Fraise Paper Pack, i papered the inside of the covers. deciding too that these papers would be the theme for the book, evoking a bit of a vintage feel. perfect!

7gypsies gaffer tape came in so very handy. it enabled me to cover under the mechanism where otherwise it would have been difficult to have painted and still look nice. i should have included a close up.

and here is the completed cover. just so very happy how it turned out. the bingo card is jenni bowlin. a basic grey rub-on is added to the top. a 7gypsies canvas tag, with a basic grey rub-on atop of that. the sentiment is torn from a vintage piece of music. that is layered on a piece of chipboard to give it stability.

do you want to see the inside?

last time on today...

so here we are with the rest of last year's book. hope a little bit of inspiration can be shared.

day 15::this was all digital save for the punched snowflakes. i felt the need to photograph my laptops homepage as it had the date and the very cold temps for that day. ali edwards title+journal blocks no. 01 rounds out the documenting.

day 16&17:: day sixteen is a simple page of cardstock with an every jot and tittle shop number tag and part of the shipping tape from target. online shopping was a big deal last year. day seventeen was yet another number tag and digital elements, again from ali edwards holiday word art. the die cut patterned paper is making memories.

day18&19::this side of the die cut paper holds a picture of the movie we watched that evening. i found the image online and trimmed it to fit inside a scallop cardstock circle. the '18' vintage number is from shabby chic crafts, as is the 19 number. dec 19's patterned paper is from making memories, as are the epoxy words. always the fan of letter stickers, there are lots to be found in this version of my december daily. the quotes tag is a 7gypsie find.

day20:: more digital elements used as a border for these two pages, and another number tag. the photo was edited over quite a bit in pse to add to it's feel.

day21:: today was a sunday. i was inspired while in church services to get a bit more digital with my feelings about the day. there is no photo for day21, only a graphic. i used Katie Pertiet's Letter Box Holiday Corners in several different hues, and added a text with the cezanne font. the bottom of that page was more mm patterned paper, and another shabby chic tag. it's opposite side is simply that days sermon notes which i hole punched and placed in my book. this really adds to the journal appeal of this collection.

day22:: more number tags, and word stickers. noticing a trend here? the patterned paper is lined notebook paper, but i do not recall the manufacture. i added red velvet ric rac to the edge. love how that sets off the whole page.

day22 back side:: a collage of baking and handmade gifts that is referenced in journaling on the previous side. opposite is a chipboard tabbed insert that leads into the next day.

day23:: the other side of the chipboard tabbed page with guess what? a vintage letter and epoxy sticker. it's opposite page with the photo is more holiday word art and lots of journaling::the emphasis of this whole project.

day24::simple jenni bowlin bingo card, a stampin up chipboard star, an mm epoxy sticker. basic grey paper backs up the invitation to christmas eve services.

day25::merry christmas!

thanksgiving tradition...again...

i posted this once before here on my blog, but today it is being shared at wip...one of our family's all time favorite thanksgiving day recipe and tradition. i love to bake. i love to be in the kitchen. i love what brings my family together.

oh, and yes, i have not forgotten...i will post more of the 2008 dec daily...thanks for your patience.

blessings!

cover story

due to technical difficulites, today's installment of the 2008 daily pages will be delayed. instead i have posted a sneak into the 2009 book. the details will be forthcoming in another post. this is just a tease for today.

one of the things i am enjoying is collecting items from various parts of my stash to make this book work. i have purchased very little by way of embellishments. only the canvas label on the cover is new. everything is found and gathered from my never ending stash that needs to be culled...again.

enjoy today!

As I was searching my photos from last years dec daily, I realized I stopped photographing them at day 10. but that’s okay, because now I am posting fully completed pages. Today the first photo is day 7. I ended yesterday with day 7. day 7 now holds a bulletin from that days church service, and of course that day’s photo, which was the official Christmas card picture. You can see how I added a bit of embellishment as well as moved where the ‘7’ would rest. This is one of the joys of this book. Where initially I am planning on a single page for a day, it could change, depending on that days activities, or length of journaling, the day may very well end up being multiple pages, and usually pages of differing sizes. Again, I love that!

day 7 :: top page

day 7 :: bottom page

let the season begin

it's all i can do to NOT change my banner. my mind is in the christmas mode for sure. it's not that it was 15 degrees this morning. it's not having begun and even completed some handmade gifts. it's not that my lists are complete. BUT ...it is the collecting of my supplies, and beginning this year's december daily. THAT for me starts the season. as i work on the pages in hopes of having them mostly completed before dec.1, my mind travels back to christmas' past. the sweet days around the fire places when the kids were little. to mr. pate and i's first married christmas together 21 years ago. i think of everyone on my list and even speak to God of them and their new year to come. the time spent preparing this annual book allows me time to be introspective and to be still. i need that. i love that. and it is the magical key that places my heart fully in the christmas spirit.

my hope for this week is to share my book from last year. i have been looking and looking at it. it makes me so happy to see a memory from each day of last year. to read back over the messages of each sunday service leading up to christmas eve. to have the memory of the plays and movies we saw. it's fast becoming my most favorite way to keep a handle on these christmas'.

i challenge you, if you have never done this, do it...do it now. there are plenty of workshops and kits out there to help you out if you feel stumped. ask me questions if you want. study ali e's approach as she is the one who turned me on to this several years past. i will post days 8-14 tomorrow.

i realized after posting this some of my pages do not have their photos. gives you a before and after sort of view.

thanks for visiting!

Veterans of the USA

we haven't forgot
the price you have paid
you've given us the freedom
that we enjoy today
and everyday i thank my God
for sending those like you
who cared for the future
the dreams of me and you

red is for the blood
blue is for the bruise
the white is for the eyes
who fought for me and you
so we lift our hearts today
filled with gratitude and praise
for the veterans of the USA

we thank the families
who gave their precious gift
the cause is greater than
all your fears
and when the flag waves high
our hearts are filled with pride
you're the reason America's still alive
