here for the hobby

January is National Hobby Month

I for one am not actually terribly great about hobbies. More so when I was younger. But since making has sort of morphed into a sort of vocation for me, I find that the 'hobby' part of it does not get the attention that it should.

With that in mind, and it being National Hobby Month, oh...and the encouraging of my 13 year old to have a hobby, it caused me to ponder this a bit.

So. What do you know? I have alluded to art journaling being a sort of hobby. I do not share too much of my journals. Not really sure why not.

But...part of what I have dabbled in (and most especially during the winter months) has been watercolor. Seemingly, I keep returning to watercolor play. Not a real artist, mind you. No. Nor really much ambition to be one. I like to dabble though. The dabbling brings with it much satisfaction.

Let me share with you a real simple 'watercolor' thing I have been doing lately. Found the idea on YouTube, of course. But then went and made it my own.

It's not really truly watercolor art. I just call it that.

It's actually taking an Oxide Ink and smashing color into a craft mat.

Then using a watercolor brush...

And making a color mark on mixed media paper or watercolor paper. Here I used SBC Mixed Media Paper.

And then...I doodle.

ScrapbookCom has a new Smooth Writer Roller Pen. So, wanting to give that some play, I used it to add the doodle to the ink. It was so much fun!!! Really easy. And I'm now wanting to throw down some hearts and flowers. And who knows what else.

Love me this no pressure approach to the things I love. Pen. Paper. Color. Ink.

Now please note, the pen ink is not waterproof. The ink needed to dry before doodling over that. When I did had the ink and it was still wet the ink bloomed a bit, which I actually did not mind. To me it was pretty cool. This is not about perfection. This is about discovery. And that's just what I did. I discovered how these elements came together in a super simple way and was content with the outcome.

Oh...and...if you simply really like roller ball pens this one is for you. The tip is .8 so it's a bit broader. The writing is super smooth. And as far as pens go it's a super amazing value when you can get 3 pens for under $6. Anyway, thought I would throw that in there.

And here's the thing. While I may add these cards (I cut up Mixed Media Paper to 3x4 then rounded the edges) to my art journal, or memory planner, they are perfect to share too. I can add a note to the back and give a note to my daughter or neighbor or friend. Just because it's a hobby does not mean it's not to be given away.

So tell me what you think. Would you doodle a bit like this too? Do you have a 'hobby'? Do you need one? Let me know in the comments.

And Happy Hobby Month to you!!!
