Organized to Create | Why Order Sparks Inspiration | JamiePate.com

an organized and curated way

There's a something-something that happens when the tools are just where we need and expect them to be.

I'm not talking perfectly labeled and inventoried. This is not to suggest a Pinterest perfect space. But rather just at the ready.

One of the thoughts I have and process often is how organization supports creativity. How knowing where the supplies are eliminates interrupting flow. How less depleted I feel when my space is cleaned up and at the ready for the next creative session.

This is one reflection that led me to recently share what's in my Mixed Media Craft Caddy.  That caddy n- a simple and portable home for the tools, the Mixed Media tools, I reach for time and again.

Now, order is not about control. But as mentioned earlier, it is about flow. When supplies are here there and everywhere, not only are the things scattered, but I'm scattered too. Mentally. It can be frustrated when creativity gets interrupted. Spending precious minutes searching and decision and looking and then perhaps maybe even just walking away.

So what's the answer?

Order.

Order helps to remove the friction. The resistance, as some of us call it.

When the most used tools live in one place, then that resistance breaks down.

Sit down. Grab the Mixed Media Craft Caddy. Begin.

Which is not restriction. It's freedom. I'm here for that!

So. Let's break this down just a bit more.

One of the best things I recently did was move from just collecting tools to curating tools.

Yeah. Curating. Like a museum curator. A curator handles and categorizes collections. We, as makers, collect tools. But it's not enough to collect. These important tools must be exhibited in such a way as to know where they are so one can actually use them as needed.

As this past video tutorial shares, the items in craft caddy have earned their spot in said caddy. These are tools I have discovered I use time and time again - when I am creating art pages - that work together. Solve the problems. And help me simply get to the story I want told on the page.

If these tools we deemed important enough to purchase in the first place have then earned space in an organized caddy, then we are sure to make the best use of them. I call this being a good steward of our time. Our money. And our energy.

And I get it. If you could see my making space right now you just might be frightened. But a caddy is so helpful in that I don't have to do a deep dive clean to make something today. My caddy with the important things makes it possible to make right now. Literally...that was what I was doing right before working on this blog post. The mixed media craft caddy is up on my workspace as I just finished a small art page in my mini journal. And ALL my tools were right there at the ready. I love that!!!

Now. Being organized does not mean being a rigid control freaks. (anyone? anyone?) It just means creating space to show up without undo resistance.

Ha! Here's the thing: our tools do not need more shelves. They need intention. Did I say that out loud?
