Grabbing several of my favorite stencils. Just a few mediums. And a single sheet of Mixed Media Paper. No particular project goal here. Just seeing where it might end up. That's what this creative sesh was all about.
Here's how this went.
First and foremost, the want to just play and see what comes. That's truly how this started. A lovely place to start indeed. If you are like me, you have quite a stash of stencils. These multi dimensional use patterns that not only enhance any mixed media kind of making, but remind us how versatile these supplies can be.
So then. The blank page. Mixed Media Paper is my jam. Always in stock here in the studio, I love me a creative session with that as the beginning begging for ink and texture and layers.
What I did was build pattern upon pattern. This is a great exercise to see how well your stencils play together. They should get an A+ for good behavior!
The creative play went something like this:
stencil → layer → rotate → overlap → add texture → repeat
This was not about making every application of stencil perfect, or even perfectly placed. This was actually an exercise in some messiness. Retained messy, but a little bit for the fun of it.
Seriously gotta admit, the messiness was encouraged because the clean up was efficient. Do you have a sink in your creative space? Because I do not. Well...now I kind of do. Using a Stencil Bath is super helpful for the clean up aspect of the creative making. I just dropped the inked stencil into the Bath and then could dry it quickly with a Crafty Cloth.
Then, when the messy got extra intense with the Texture Paste? I could just use the handy dandy Stencil Brush to clean up that layer so that it would not dry and be an extra endeavor to clean later. I LOVE THAT!
Why do I love that? Flow, baby! I could just stay in the creative flow and not worry about a texture drying nightmare.
Anyway, the last part of this single canvas idea is the best. As shown in the video, there is more than a single way this mixed media art page could go.
