layers of story
As the month arrives to its closing days and as Thanksgiving is upon us, it is a bit of a good bye to a most beautiful season. The Arctic blast of this week and the coming days is telling of the season at hand. While I lite the candles, string twinkly lights, and make sure the fire is going, I will embrace the season ahead. But not without a little fight of holding on to the season that just was.
I am unabashedly and shamelessly a seasonal maker. While, indeed, I have a brand to market, and an industry that is always thinking ahead of the moment at hand, I continue to do my best to stay in the season a little while longer.
These shaped cards were very telling of that reality. The browns were the dominant mood. Reflecting the scenery around me, fall colors finally let go of the landscape, and monochromatic browns are now the color of the outside world. But how lucky are we to even embrace that beauty. There is not a dried tall grass I walk by without giving it its glorious due. Especially when sunrise is shining through it highlighting all its illustrious detail.
Yes. I am a beauty chaser.
The fact that we 'get to' make beauty right there in our own little workspaces. Our cozy craft rooms and studios always beckoning us to find and make beautiful things. No matter what the season.
And if in fact the dreary of winter gets to be just a little too much on our light seeking souls, well then, bring on the pinks and purples and all the bright shiny things, and make that happen!
That being said, I am literally sitting here watching the sun light the morning horizon. And you know what the colors are? Vivid pinks. Sweet purples. A myriad of blue tones. And this amazing Saltwater Taffy splash towards the lower stratus of color. So there you have it. An amazing array of gorgeous colorization even with sub-zero temps. How happy is that?
One just may need to play that out on an art journal page.
While the title of this post is the 'How To Vintage Layers', I will need to send you to the YouTube for all those details. You won't actually find them in this post. That's because the wanna be creative writer in me wanted more to celebrate that which fuels the making, and that is the inspiration that is all around us. I believe it is crucial that we cultivate this seeing, this seeking. It takes slowing down. It requires time. And the making requires practice.

The YouTube tutorial is all about shaped & layered file cards — equal parts vintage, texture, and story.
A single die shape + a few thoughtful layers = endless possibilities. Ideas one can take in multiple directions. Whether adding to a card file collection, crafting card fronts, or simply exercising and practicing our creativity. Ideas for the making.
Would you use this as a tag, a journal insert, a file card, or a starter for a greeting card? I would love to know.
In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving! And cheers to the coming Christmas holidays.
